Radical Innovation from Space

Are you interested in breakthrough innovation and how your business can be part of solving the world’s great challenges?

We all know the huge challenges facing mankind, in the use of energy, water, and limited resources. We know the problems created through extreme urbanisation and growth of megacities lacking waste management and other essential infrastructures. We know about the social problems coming from unequity, malfunctioning education systems and unsustainable practices in many industries.

Over the last year, in a collaborative project called ”Down to Earth”, I have been part of developing a really exciting innovation process with the focus on creating radical solutions for sustainability issues through cross-over and inspiration from the space sector.

The ongoing research for space applications is really interesting. In space, we are confined to limited resources, lack of water, cold and dark. Solutions have to be designed taking these limitations into account from the start. This is contradicting human solutions on earth, where most have been initially designed based on abundant resources. Thinking about space is mind-challenging and it helps us rethink systems we otherwise take for granted.

Space applications have used cross-disciplinary research to create technologies making use of the frontiers of knowledge in materials, nanontechnology, biotechnology, IT, telecoms and other disciplines. This means a huge potential for cross-over innovation to other industries.

The innovation process helps companies to apply radical innovation techniques and cross-over technologies to create more sustainable processes, businesses and products for the future. We have worked with some world leading companies developing their next generation processes and products. Both product and services companies in B2B and B2C businesses have been using the innovation process with great results. So far we have worked with Electrolux, SKF, Volvo Car Corporation, Academedia, Lidköping Municipality, Veprox and Elos.

The innovation process is really compact, bringing together cross-disciplinary competences from design, sustainability, space technology and business development to create remarkable results and innovations with companies in only a couple of days.
